October 23, 2009

Welcome New Subscribers! and Welcome Back Old Friends!
This issue has info for your muscle car search and updates on new pages on the website that you don't want to miss.

Where have you been looking this month to find your muscle car? Been to any good car corrals? While the high season for car shows and muscle car sales is coming to end in most parts of the United States, there are some great opportunities left for muscle car buyers.

There are three more Goodguys shows: the 16th Southeast Nationals in Concord,NC is 10/31-11/2, the 20th Autumn Gathering in Pleasanton, CA is 11/14-11/15, and the 11th Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, AZ is 11/20-22. The Mecum Muscle Car auction in Kansas City is coming up on 12/4-5. And, of course, one of our favorites, the annual Turkey Run in Daytona Beach, FL at Daytona International Speedway on 11/26-29. You can see more information about this event in the sections below.

If you can't make it to any of these large national shows, take a quick visit to the Hemmings website to search for events in your area.

New On The Website

New content has been added to the website to help you find your muscle car.

If you are new to muscle car buying, you may be confused by some of the phrases that you see in classified ads. You can check out the recently added how to read muscle car classifieds page for some help. This page tells you what it really means when the seller says "it was owned by a little old lady..."

Believe it or not, we are asked over and over exactly what is a muscle car? Do you know the definition? See if our definition matches yours at the new "Muscle Car?" page.

Quick Tip - Overlooked Muscle Car Sources

Serious muscle car buyers are always looking for their dream car. But what about you? How about that yearly visit to the in-laws? or the family vacation to the cabin? An often overlooked source for muscle cars for sale is local newspaper classifieds.

When you are traveling, pick up a local newspaper when you stop in for gas. Many hotels have local papers available in boxes in the lobby. Scan the classified section for autos for sale. You may be surprised what you find.

Looking in the Valdosta,GA local paper today, there are three interesting cars: a silver 1972 Chevelle SS with black stripes with the 454 big block, a silver 1985 Corvette with the very popular red interior, and a 2009 Mustang GT. These cars are probably not advertised in any of the larger online classifieds. One could be a great deal for you!

Featured Muscle Car Search Location

This month we are featuring Fleming's Ultimate Garage as a recommended muscle car dealer. Fleming's is located in Rockville, Maryland which is in the suburbs of Washington, DC. They are on Rockville Pike (Rt. 355) right off of Interstate 270. The facility is in a busy traffic area and you'll need to keep a sharp watch for it when you get close so you don't miss it and need to U-turn like we did on our first visit. Don't worry, it's worth it!

The main facility holds a fair number of cars in a small space. There is also an overflow building. Their inventory is interesting and includes sports cars and imports like Porsches, Maseratis, and similar. Fun to look at and admire even if you're in the market for some good old American muscle.

There are plenty of Ford, Chevy and Mopar classics for you to inspect. The price ranges are from $14990 for a 1992 Mustang GT with the 5.0 HO to $99,990 for a pristine, nut-and-bolt restored 1971 Hemi 'Cuda. In between those two price points are many dream rides just waiting to be found. For example, there are a couple of Olds 442s, two nice Firebirds, a '68 AMX with the 390, and a nice selection of Camaros and Chevelles.

The staff was very busy selling cars the day we were there. We were happy to be left on our own to thoroughly check out the cars and the dealership and other than a friendly "hello!" the staff basically left us alone. (We consider this a good thing!)

Flemings is offering FREE enclosed shipping to anywhere in the US so if you aren't in the DC metro area, be sure to check out their website. You can sign up for a locator service and be notified when your dream car is in stock.

A small photo of Flemings and a brief description is included on our website here. Scroll down to see it.

Thanksgiving and Muscle Cars

Most people think "over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go" at Thanksgiving. Thousands of muscle car lovers from all over the US think shorts, sandals and Daytona Beach Turkey Run.

If you are looking for a muscle car, any kind of muscle car, Daytona Beach and Daytona International Speedway at Thanksgiving is a must-do trip. You can read the descriptions on the official Turkey Run website but until you have experienced the event in person you have no idea of how very amazing it is.

There are literally thousands of show cars on the infield: street rods, survivors, hot rods, exotics, customs, muscle cars and more. The Turkey Run is hard to describe. Let's just say it's like Disney World for muscle car lovers. You can't do it all in one day, or even two.

In addition to the show cars, there is a huge car corral with close to one thousand classic cars for sale. As with any other car show, there are sellers with reasonable prices and sellers with outrageous prices for rust buckets. You need to be prepared to shop and prepared to negotiate. We recommend bringing a notepad so you can keep track of interesting finds and their location. Location is very important - the speedway is much larger than it looks on TV and you do not want to waste time walking in circles trying to find that awesome muscle car you saw earlier in the day.

There are other distractions, a large swap meet for buying parts, a craft show, raffles and giveaways, night time events. Can't report much on any of those activities because we were focused on buying a muscle car. We did spend a chunk of time at the swap meet, checking out what parts were available for our dream car and what they cost. Next time we'll definitely plan for more time in the swap area.

You can see two videos our of trip to the Turkey Run on our muscle car videos page.

If Florida isn't possible for you, check out some of the other car shows we recommend as great sources to find your muscle car.
